Inner and Outer Form of Horror

Inner form:
Thematic - themes, morals, messages, characters, typical story-lines.
e.g. children possessed/can see the dead etc., a final girl or the story ends on a cliffhanger and the story then may continue in a sequel or in other plots the film may end in death of all characters or just the supernatural/horror element.

Outer form:
Iconography - location, mise-en-scene, colours, marketing i.e. film posters
e.g. dark colours, ominous setting, distressed/scared emotions of actors/facial expressions, shadows/dark figures, use of font, isolated setting, props - weapons, dolls, mirrors, toys etc.

An example film that uses both the inner and outer form of horror:

'The Red Balloon'

'The Red Balloon' uses Inner form of horror through the use of a child being able to see this ghostly rabbit figure move. The film also ends with a cliffhanger as to what happens to the child and the babysitter; both which are qualities of Inner form horror. This film also uses outer form of horror through the use of an isolated setting of a house in the country, dark colours/lighting, dark figures in the shadows of the setting, the distressed facial expressions of the babysitter and the use of costume of the 'ghost'/intruder which amplified the horror element.

  1. Excellent detail in your evaluation of your preliminary film. I imagine lots of your research posts are drafts so please upload this week. I don't want you to fall behind! Please also upload your story idea so we can provide feedback.
