Conventions of a Short Film

  • Characters - short films tend to stick to 2-3 characters - there is no need for a deep background story of each character or to make them complex, as it is a short film and needs to be concise. This also allows the audience to connect and relate to the characters within such a short period of time.
  • A Twist - the incorporation of a twist within a short film makes a simple, short plot, complex and more interesting for the audience.
  • Budget - short films always have a small budget; therefore, the props, costumes etc. simplistic and lacking in variation.
  • Length - short films vary from a couple of minutes to the longest being around thirty minutes.
  • Todorov - his theory of equilibrium is usually applied to short films; equilibrium - everything is normal, disequilibrium - a problem occurs, and new equilibrium - the problem is solved, everything is back to normal however a change is still noticeable.
Pros:
  • Focus on the small details of the film - how to present characters clearly in a short time/the symbolism of props/the impact of mise-en-scene, editing, camera-work and sound - pushes creativity
  • Simplicity
  • Tight budget
  • Completion time is quicker
  • Easy distribution
Cons:
  • Limited time for plot
  • Too simple? - no chance to intrigue the audience and make the movie effective in its genre.
  • No high income
  • Limited marketing
