Costumes:
Female and male protagonists (middle-aged and younger) - casual, everyday clothing - jeans/shirts. By having the main characters dress in everyday, modern clothing, the audience are more likely to identify with the characters. Their regular appearance humanises them to the audience, thus making it easier for them to put themselves in the characters position, therefore inducing the fear factor.
The middle-aged couple are wearing smarter and darker clothing which can be representative of their scenes being in the past.
Demon - all dark clothing - black jeans and jumper - evokes mystery and helps him represent a 'shadow' - someone not meant to be seen - the colour black represents darkness and symbolises to the audience that he is an entity they should fear.
Setting:
Setting is an important element within horror as it should represent an enclosed , confined area as well as something relatable to the audience. For our short film we chose a suburban area and modern house, which evokes the sense of the unknown as the setting is not visually symbolic of horror. Usually abandoned, run down, or old buildings are used to represent horror and hauntings, although we wanted our setting to be more inconspicuous.
We mainly used the internal rooms of the setting and only a couple outside shots. The use of only a couple rooms and specifically the attic helped the plot be simplistic and easy to follow. The dark attic evokes mystery and the fear of the unknown as attics are regularly used within horror. 'Things' can hide out of sight within the attic, and as it is a room within the house, it feels more personal and scary because being unaware of something within your own home that is uncontrollable and unexplained, and where you should feel safe if a big fear for many people.
